Overcoming Bad Habits: The Funny Version

Just saw this video on Michael Hyatt’s blog. Bob Newhart has a much funnier take on overcoming bad habits than I do!

I saw this video Wednesday. It may be meant for humor, but there is great wisdom in it too. “Stop it” is often exactly what we need to do. We make the solution too difficult sometimes.

Maybe sometimes – but usually it’s difficult because our habits and sins control us, and we don’t have the power to stop what we’re doing. What’s easy for one person to stop is incredibly difficult for another person. The areas we need self-control in are the very areas we don’t have self-control. That’s why it’s so important to renew our minds in the areas where we’re not able to “just stop it” – whether it’s habits or emotions like worry, anger, judgment, etc. Although if I had Bob Newhart in my house telling me to just stop it every time I was about to mess up, that might be helpful!

Self control is not easy. If it were, it wouldn’t be the source of so much of struggles. Maybe it would help to have Bob saying “stop it” in my ear often, but that approach sure doesn’t work with my kids. Yet, I have used that approach mentally (tellng myself to “stop it”), and it does help at times.

Great idea, Kari. Maybe I’ll think back to that video and imagine Bob saying it to me. :)
