Online Bible Study: The Renewing of the Mind Project

Online Bible StudyHave you ever wanted to change, but you weren’t sure how?

Paul tells us in Romans 12:2 that we’re transformed by the renewing of the mind.

In this online study which begins March 2, 2015, you’ll learn how to renew your mind on a practical, day-by-day basis and what it looks like to rely on God’s strength–not your own–for something you’d like to change.

We’ll start with a small project — something you’d really like to change — and then we’ll start going to God for help with it.

Here are a few possible projects you could take on:

  • Letting go of a negative emotion such as worry, insecurity, anger, or judgment.
  • Stopping or controlling a habit, such as Facebook or overeating.
  • Pursuing a goal (such as writing a book).
  • Starting a habit, such as a daily quiet time habit.

This isn’t a traditional Bible study so you won’t have regular Bible study homework each week, but you will have renewing of the mind homework each day. It will be up to you how much time you put into it.

We’ll be exploring the following renewing of the mind tools:

  • Scripture Meditation
  • Truth Journaling
  • Scripture Prayers using the 250+ Bible verses in the Renewing of the Mind Project
  • Conversations with God about your project using the 48 sets of conversation-starter questions in The Renewing of the Mind Project

Here’s what to expect from the study:

  • A weekly video from either myself or another person in the group.
  • A daily discussion question or two Monday through Friday.
  • Opportunities to find accountability partners.
  • Encouragement from others who are working on their own projects.
  • Optional Bible studies if you’d like a Bible study each week to go with your project.

Here’s what you’ll need to do the study:

  • The Renewing of the Mind Project (paperback is recommended as you will use this as a resource book, but Kindle would also work).
  • A Bible and a journal.
  • A Facebook account: we’ll be using a closed Facebook group to set up the study. Only the members in the group will be able to see your posts.

If you’d like to join the study, I’d love to have you! To join, click on this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/331000447097806/and then make a request to join the group. This is a closed Facebook so we don’t need to be friends for you to join. I’ll be making the Facebook page look better at some point, but wanted to get this out today so you could plan ahead if you want to join. Leave a comment if you have any questions!

Forgot to say – we’ll have five classes over a span of four weeks, with three weeks of renewing the mind homework.

Hi Barbara! I would like to participate in this study. I already bought the Kindle version and will purchase a hard copy before the weeks end.

Sounds great! If I had FB (and I wasn’t about to have a baby) I’d totally be in!

Those little babies – they take up lots of time, but I wish I had one right now (at least for a little while!).

Now I have a dilemma – I have given up Facebook for Lent, because I spend way too much time on Facebook anyway. And I would really love to do this study. So, what do I do? Sigh…

      February 19, 2015 at 8:30 am

That is hard! I’m guessing it might be hard to come on just for the study and not get on the rest of Facebook – one possibility if you really want to do the study is to set a boundary that you can only come on to the study group page and then do a “controlling Facebook” project as your renewing of the mind project. But if you think it would be better not to do it, the book itself is all about going to God for help with life so you could just do a you and God study. (Or see if a friend or two wants to do it with you.)

Thank you Barb. I know myself, the idea of being on Facebook will be just too tempting for me – just to take a quick peak at what is going on. This is something I do feel passionate about though (renewing of one’s mind), because I honestly believe you will never conquer anything (weight, anxiety, sin, etc) unless you start to think the way God thinks about things. I may just do this one on my own for now though. Thank you so much for your reply… :-)

That sounds like a good idea. Also, it will lead to a more peaceful Lent not adding that additional temptation to your life. :)

I would love to, but risk over-commitment. Would you consider doing it again later this spring?

    • Barb Raveling says

      February 23, 2015 at 11:16 am

I doubt I’ll have time to do it again this spring, but you never know! Will have to see how this one goes and how much time I have. Thanks for asking!

I sent a request to join the group and I bought my book! If you buy a hard copy on Amazon, they offer the kindle for .99 so I bought both! I am really looking forward to this. I have been looking for a Bible study to join and I feel like this is an answer to my prayers. The start date is perfect. Thank you for doing this.

I sent a request to join group but don’t know if that has happened yet. Also ordered book and it is supposed to arrive today… Hope it does. Have nutty schedule in this same time period because of health needs- cancer treatments, some other tests, etc.but think this will be a great study to be in during this time… Didn’t you say we would be doing some things in groups before the start of class or is that to begin on first day of class. Will a confirmation come to email that I am in group?

Hi Elena, I just checked and it looks like you’ve been added. Click on this link and you should be able to find the group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/331000447097806/. I’ve been doing some get to know each other questions. If you’d like to comment, just click on the word “comment” which you should see right under the question I put up – it will be good to have you in the group! Also, it sounds like life is pretty stressful right now! I think the study could be really helpful for it. Let me know if you have any questions!

I see that the FB online class on renewing the mind has already begun :( Will this class be repeated so those of us who missed it can start from the beginning?

    • Barb Raveling says

      March 15, 2015 at 8:33 pm

I will probably repeat it at some point. I’m also thinking of trying to set it up so people can go through it on their own with a small group. I’m learning more and more the value of having a small local accountability group for growth – maybe 2 to 4 people. I’m going through it right now with two other women locally and it has been so helpful, as we’re all working on the same project and is really fun to discuss it as we learn so much from each other plus are able to hold each other accountable to the renewing of the mind. If you have someone you know locally who could go through it with you, I think that would be really helpful.

I’ve started the Freedom from emotional eating study, but after reading I’m wondering if I shouldn’t do the renewing of the mind project first. What do you think?

    • Barb Raveling says

      March 25, 2015 at 6:19 pm

I think I would probably do either Taste for Truth or the Renewing of the Mind Project first. The advantage of the Renewing of the Mind Project is that it focuses on developing a renewing of the mind habit – which is what we need if we want to be transformed. Taste for Truth is nice because the Bible studies are specifically geared to weight loss. The first 6 studies are really convicting for establishing boundaries. If you want more info on the differences between the studies look under the weight loss resources tab at the top of this blog as I describe the differences. Hope it goes well whatever you decide!

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. Seo Plugin
