Do you ever know you need to do something, but you just can’t make yourself do it? I have that problem quite a bit. So on today’s episode of the Christian Habits Podcast, I decided to go through the dread questions from the Renewing of the Mind Project to help me get back to work after the long holiday weekend. If you’re having a day where you dread your to do list, these questions will help.

If you struggle with procrastination, listen to the podcast and renew your mind along with me. We’ll be talking about 7 different reasons we dread our to do lists and 10 questions we can use to stop. Here’s the list of reasons and questions we’ll be going through:

7 Reasons You Dread Your To Do List

  1. It’s too hard.
  2. It’s not fun.
  3. We feel like we can’t do it.
  4. We’re afraid of failure
  5. We’re afraid it won’t be perfect.
  6. We’re afraid of what people will think.
  7. It’s too expensive.

10 Questions to ask When You Dread Your To Do List

  1. What would you like to accomplish today? Be specific.
  2. Why do you want to accomplish that?
  3. Why don’t you feel like working right now?
  4. What do you feel like doing instead?
  5. If you ignore your project and do that instead, how will you feel afterwards?
  6. What will you have to sacrifice to work on your project?
  7. How will you feel when you complete this project and why will you feel that way?
  8. When you think of how you’ll feel, is it worth the sacrifice to work on it?
  9. What’s the first thing you need to do if you want to work on this project? (Example: Get out your notebook, open the computer file, look up the telephone number, etc.)
  10. Why don’t you do that right now and see how it goes from there?

Bible Verses for When You Dread Your To Do List

Psalm 61:1-4 Hear my cry, O God; give heed to my prayer. From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a refuge for me, a tower of strength against the enemy. Let me dwell in your tent forever; let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings.

Psalm 68:35 O God, You are awesome from Your sanctuary. The God of Israel Himself gives strength and power to the people. Blessed be God!

Jonah 2:9a But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving.

2 Corinthians 12:9a And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.”

Hebrews 12:11 All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Awe… I remember. Excellent questions! It really does take contemplation to come to terms with discipline. It’s not easy, but if it were, then everyone would be doing it… instead of talking, or writing about it. Good for you, Barb. And thanks for the lift.

Thanks, Floyd. I need to go through those questions again right now because it’s Friday afternoon and I’m not feeling very motivated!

    Hi Barb,

I found having a to do-list helps me to remember what needs to get done and making progress. Great post!

I agree, but I just realized I haven’t been following a list much lately. I need to get back to that!
