Have you ever turned to food for comfort, relief, or escape? Do you feel better the minute you’re sinking your teeth into something yummy–especially when life is going terrible? Many of us have struggled with food for years—turning to it for comfort, relief, or even a sense of control. Others have battled with the pressure of being “skinny,” believing that achieving a certain body shape will bring happiness, respect, or popularity. But what if true freedom lies not in yummy food or a thin body but in shifting our perspective and relying on God? In this episode of the Taste for Truth podcast, we’ll explore how to break free from these overeating and “skinny idol” strongholds and embrace a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Episode Summary
Hey, everyone. It’s so good to be here with you in my last full podcast episode. I have mixed emotions about this because it’s been such a joy to create the Taste for Truth podcast. Though I won’t be adding new episodes for a while, I’ll be leaving the podcast up because who knows? Maybe someday I’ll return to it.
For this final episode, I wanted to leave you with something meaningful—an overview of how to break free from the stronghold of overeating and the stronghold of chasing thinness. Both can have a powerful grip on our lives, but there is a way out.
Understanding Strongholds
In the Old Testament, a stronghold was a physical place of safety—a fortress where people could run when they were under attack. But there is also a spiritual stronghold, one that David spoke about when he described running to God as his refuge. When life was hard, David didn’t just rely on physical safety—he turned to God for security and strength.
God wants to be that for us, too. When challenges arise, He wants us to turn to Him as our refuge. But often, we don’t. Instead, we run to other things for comfort, and for many of us, that “safe place” has become food.
How often have we turned to food to make us feel better? It works for a short time, but it never lasts. The habit of using food for comfort becomes ingrained, and before we know it, food controls us. On the flip side, some of us don’t run to food—we run to the idea of being thin. We believe that if we can just be skinny, life will be better. I used to believe that if I could just lose weight, all my problems would disappear. But both of these beliefs—turning to food or making thinness our goal—are strongholds that keep us trapped.
Breaking Free from an Overeating Stronghold
A stronghold is built on lies. Lies like “this food will make me feel better” or “I can’t live without this.” Each time we act on those lies, we reinforce them, adding another “stone” to the wall of the stronghold. The way to break free is to start dismantling that wall, one lie at a time, by renewing our minds with truth.
The first step is to set boundaries. These boundaries prevent us from running to food as our refuge. They could be as simple as eating three meals a day or following a structured eating plan. Whatever boundaries you choose, they should help you avoid using food as an emotional escape.
Once we have boundaries, we need to renew our minds every time we feel tempted to break them. This is where truth journaling or using tools like the I Deserve a Donut app can be helpful. The goal is to recognize the lie, replace it with truth, and slowly weaken the grip that food has on us.
We can also take practical steps to make breaking free easier. If certain foods trigger overeating, keep them out of the house. If stress drives emotional eating, find healthier ways to manage stress, like prayer, walking, or talking with a friend. And most importantly, start turning to God as your refuge. When life is hard, practice running to Him instead of food.
Breaking Free from the “Skinny Stronghold”
The obsession with being thin can be just as powerful as overeating. When we tie our worth to our weight, we create a different kind of stronghold. This one is fueled by activities like constantly weighing ourselves, comparing ourselves to others, or researching diets endlessly. To break free, we need to set boundaries around these behaviors.
Renewing our minds about body image means shifting our perspective to how God sees us. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, and our value isn’t found in a number on the scale. Learning to see ourselves as whole people—our strengths, our talents, our hearts—helps us let go of the idol of thinness.
Another powerful tool is shifting our focus from ourselves to others. Instead of dreading social situations because of how we look, we can enter them with the mindset of loving and encouraging others. One thing that helped me was praying for the people I would interact with at social gatherings. It took the focus off my own insecurities and helped me engage with others in a meaningful way.
Maintaining Freedom and Moving Forward
Breaking free from these strongholds isn’t a one-time event. It’s a lifelong process of renewing our minds. Even after we’ve overcome emotional eating or the obsession with being thin, challenges will come up. Staying aware of new struggles and continuing to apply truth to our thoughts is key.
Accountability can also help us maintain freedom. Whether it’s a trusted friend, a Bible study, or an online community, having support makes a big difference. And when setbacks happen—because they will—we don’t have to let them define us. Instead of falling into an all-or-nothing mindset, we can reset and keep moving forward.
A Final Encouragement
If you’re struggling, know that you’re not alone. I remember how hard it felt to believe that I would ever change. But freedom is possible. With consistency, prayer, and truth, you can break free from the stronghold of food and body image.
I encourage you to seek out support. Find a friend or group to walk with you on this journey. If you need resources, my Bible studies and I Deserve a Donut app are available to help. You don’t have to do this alone—God is with you every step of the way.
Before I go, let me pray for you:
Father, thank you for each person reading this who has struggled with eating and body image, just as I have. You see their struggles, and you love them. I pray that you would help them set boundaries and renew their minds with truth. Give them strength, encouragement, and support as they walk this journey. Most of all, help them turn to You as their refuge, so they can experience true peace and freedom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Thank you all for being part of this journey with me. I’ll still be around on my other podcast, the Christian Habits podcast, and through my online courses. I hope to see you there!
