Interview with Terry Tignor
Today I’m excited to share an interview with my friend Terry Tignor, who has lost 140 pounds over the last 2 1/2 years.
Terry is the friend I mentioned in the intro to I Deserve a Donut (And Other Lies That Make You Eat).
Terry has wonderful words of wisdom, and I know her interview will encourage you, no matter how many pounds you have to lose!
In this episode, Terry shares some of her struggles along the way and how God helped her through the process.

Mindasmith says
Anyway to get a transcript of the recording?
Barb Raveling says
I’m sorry, no, I don’t have a transcript. I actually forgot to include the link for the recording but I just updated it and it’s on there now. Also, Minda, I commented again on your last comment on the Christian Weight Loss Resources tab – not sure if you’re getting updates to that conversation so I thought I’d let you know!
Mindasmith says
No problem, thought I’d ask :) I did see your other response thanks for sharing you mentors “in print” :)
Bernard Haynes says
Great story.
Barb Raveling says
Thanks, Bernard. Terry is a real encouragement to me.

Barb Raveling says
Thanks, Floyd!

This was so encouraging. It couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m working my way through Taste for Truth now with an online group. I have the IDAD app, but need to remember to use it. This interview caused me to rethink some of my boundaries. I keep trying to fit myself into a boundary mold that just isn’t for me. Thank you posting. By the way, I subscribed to you podcasts. Can’t wait to hear more!
Barb Raveling says
I’m so glad it was encouraging! I’m not sure if I would have persevered with getting the podcast out if it weren’t for Terry’s interview. I thought her advice was so incredible that I wanted to get it out. I’m glad it was helpful!
karen Foster says
Enjoyed hearing the interview. Her attitude can apply to many things and not just eating. I need to renew my mind. No more excuses.
Barb Raveling says
I thought so too, Karen. I loved what she said about God wanting to work together with us to overcome the things we need to overcome. The whole interview was encouraging to me even though I no longer struggle with eating.
Dave Arnold says
How exciting! So glad you are doing this podcast. Way to go.
Barb Raveling says
Thanks, Dave!
Elly says
I love the terminology of boundaries. The word Diet seems like a mindset of deprivation, Whereas the word boundaries we use to protect ourselves. I love that idea. Thanks for sharing. love you
Barb Raveling says
Thanks, Elly. I’m so glad it was helpful!
Karon Ruiz says
This was wonderful and very encouraging.
Barb Raveling says
Thanks, Karon, I’m really looking forward to my next interview with her – will be visiting with her tonight!
Dena Fincher says
I really enjoyed this interview, I loved where she said that she allowed God into areas to clean up where she had not before and that has deepened their relationship. I too struggle with with weight loss and emotional eating. Thank you for sharing and I am so glad that I happened upon your blog today. I look forward to using the tools that you have in place to help with weight loss and renewing the mind.
Barb Raveling says
Hi Dena, So glad to have you here! I’m glad you found Terry’s interview to be helpful – she’s an inspiration to me as well. Hope you find the tools on the blog helpful as well. Let me know if you have any questions!
Dre says
I’m not trying to be rude but this was not inspiring at all. I admit I only listened to 1/2 of it and then turned it off. But it’s been on my mind ever since. Most of what she spoke about seemed to be diet rules, the number of carbs, “compensating” for this or that, number of calories. It really made me feel sad for her! Her life has become this obsession with numbers and counting every bit of food that goes in her mouth. It’s legalism. I’m sure she still has to deal with being “good” or being “bad” on certain days. Food can not determine our worth! Some people manage to stay thin their whole life. I want to study them and see why they don’t have to count every morsel but eat naturally and don’t overeat- as God intended. Sorry Terry, I truly hope you can keep the weight off. But it sounds like a LOT of time and work!
Barb Raveling says
Hi Dre, I’m sorry the podcast was a struggle for you. I waited awhile to respond because I wasn’t sure how to respond. I feel bad for Terry because she’s my friend and I think you assumed things about her that aren’t true but I also understand your dilemma and I wanted to give you a voice. The problem with comments is that you don’t see face expressions and tone of voice so sometimes things sound harsher than they are. So I appreciate that you’re not being rude. :) I’m guessing you felt like you had a responsibility to express your opinion, which I also appreciate.
I of course have a different opinion or I wouldn’t have put her interview on the podcast. :) Terry was never obsessed with counting carbs that I saw. It takes less than 5 minutes a day to count calories or carbs if you’re on a diet. I lost my weight with WW and I definitely wasn’t obsessed with it – it was just a matter of recording the numbers.
I guess the question I would ask is, “Is obsession a particular style of boundaries or is it matter of the heart?” I would make an argument that it’s a matter of the heart and that you can have any boundaries and be obsessed or not obsessed. I would also ask the question, “Is it a sin to be on a diet?” If the Bible doesn’t call it a sin, then the action itself isn’t a sin unless there is some heart issue involved. And I don’t see anywhere in the Bible where it calls it a sin.
Terry is a wonderful, mature Christian woman and I was happy to put her interview on the podcast. I try to share interviews of people with different boundaries since I believe that all healthy boundaries are okay. And I guess I would say that it’s legalistic to say people have to follow a certain set of boundaries and that one set is “bad” and another set is “good.”
That said, I realize that this is a subject Christians disagree on. So I hope we can agree to disagree and still fellowship together! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

I just recently stumbled onto your website and have been devouring information and have ordered two of your books off Amazon. I really found this podcast to be very inspiring and I especially liked the parts where she talked about boundaries. They are going to be different for each one of us as we all have different issues we need to deal with. I’m praying for guidance in that area to see where God is leading me. I just wanted to say thanks for doing this and thanks to Terri for opening up and becoming vulnerable so we can learn through her experience.
Barb Raveling says
Hi Bee! So glad you found the podcast to be inspiring! Terry is a good friend of mine, and she inspires me as well! I’m excited for you as you go with God on this journey!
Cindy McMurphy says
I would like to know the name of the books I need to help with my weight loss and renewing my mind as Terry did. I know God sent me here for a reason. I weigh 237 lbs and have gone up as far as 247 and am tired of being tired and not being able to get healthy. It has been over 20 years since I have felt good in my body. Thank you!
Barb Raveling says
Hi Cindy! Sorry it took so long to get back to you! I just talked to Terry and she said the name of the book was “Why We Are Fat and What We Can Do About It.” She also really liked Whole 30. She used the questions and Bible verses from “I Deserve a Donut (And Other Lies That Make You Eat)” to renew her mind. Hope that helps!
Maria says
I absolutely loved listening to this podcast. I too have been over 250 pounds and lost 100 pounds. Having boundaries is huge!! I have recently been turned on to your book “ Taste For Truth” and your website. Although the I began this journey 3 1/2 years ago and have kept the weight off within a few pounds, I have been also like a dry drunk, just constantly walking a tight rope. I have been inspired greatly by realizing that the key is having the mind renewed plus the boundaries. It has inspired me to share more with others. It feels like, I have the a key that fits both locks on the door now. Thank you sharing the different podcast and the wisdom the LORD has blessed you with.
Barb Raveling says
I love the way you put that, Maria! The key that fits both locks on the door. So good! So glad you are enjoying the podcasts. If you ever want to do a podcast interview for the Taste for Truth podcast, let me know. I think it would be interesting to hear from your perspective!
